HISTORY
Founded in 1979 by Artistic Director Julie Himmelstrup as an artist-in-residence program in the community, Music in the Park Series "has become the area's major showcase for chamber music." (Minneapolis Star Tribune) Originally under the auspices of the St. Anthony Park Arts Forum, the series attained independent status with its own Board of Directors in 1987. Although it is based in St. Anthony Park, the series reaches well beyond the neighborhood, building audiences through creative, culturally inclusive programming.
ARTISTIC PURPOSE
Through imaginative and varied programming that includes newly commissioned works, along with traditional chamber music, the series attracts a dedicated and growing audience. Nurturing the careers of outstanding emerging and established artists and providing outreach programs for audiences of all ages are the essence of Music in the Park Series' artistic purpose.

JULIE HIMMELSTRUP
Music in the Park Series founder and artistic director Julie Himmelstrup was recently honored by the St. Anthony Park Community Council. She was nominated to the City of St. Paul Neighborhood Honor Roll in appreciation of her contributions to the quality of life in St. Anthony Park.
Julie Himmelstrup has been named one of the 100 noteworthy individuals who shaped Minnesota music in the past century, as selected by the Minneapolis Star Tribune critics. (October 2000)
Himmelstrup was named a 1994 Marvelous Minnesota Woman for her work as founder and Artistic Director of Music in the Park Series. In 1997, Himmelstrup was honored with the prestigious Champion of New Music Award, a national award given by the American Composers Forum.
An active performer, consultant, and strong advocate for the arts, Himmelstrup has contacts with virtually every Twin Cities musical organization. Over the years, Music in the Park Series has formed partnerships with the Schubert Club, American Composers Forum, and Minnesota Public Radio.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in Music Education and Piano, Himmelstrup also studied at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Toronto, Canada. An active chamber musician and accompanist, she also participates in many Twin Cities arts organizations including The Schubert Club and Thursday Musical.
Himmelstrup and her husband Anders have been residents of the St. Anthony Park neighborhood for over 41 years.
