Welcome to Music in the Park Series’ Family Concerts 2008. Our 18th season brings together the finest of Twin Cities’ performers with children of all ages and their families to enjoy music from around the world. Listeners will delight in traditional American songs and games, enchanting Celtic music, and the exotic sounds of China and India.

Audience behavior and participation are the focus of “What Makes a Good Audience?” Doing her best to steal the show, Perrin, a master clown, plays many charactersusually unhelpfulas Ross performs his arrangements of classic kids’ songs. Concert-goers of all ages help Perrin learn to become a good audience member. Organ grinder Angelo Rulli adds to the fun by cranking out tunes on his hurdy-gurdy (music box).

The wizardry of Celtic winds and strings comes alive when Willow Braethe duo of Laura MacKenzie and Andrea Sternstrikes up its unique combination of Celtic harp with wooden flutes, whistles, concertina, bagpipes and voice. Their renditions of traditional Irish and Scottish airs, songs, and dance tunes uplift, transport, and charm.
“Mystical Asian Sounds”

Gao Hong, pipa; Shubhendra Rao, sitar; Biplab Bhattacharya, tabla
Hong, Shubhendra, and Biplab perform a program of Asian music, bridging Chinese and Indian cultures. The three artists introduce and demonstrate their unique instruments as the audience claps, imitates sounds, and sings along with the music. For the finale, the musicians perform Morninga story showing the “sister-brother” relationship between the pipa and sitar.
Family Concerts 2008 is made possible, in part, by funds provided by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council from an appropriation by the Minnesota Legislature, the Lillian Wright and C. Emil Berglund Foundation, the Saint Anthony Park Community Foundation, and Target.
